What a shocking event! The iconic National Museum of Brazil was devastated by a tremendous fire, stealing away a treasure trove of history. Once one of the largest museums in the Americas, it housed an astonishing 20 million items that captivated the imagination.
Radio France International has done a fantastic job covering
this heartbreaking story, connecting us to the rich legacy we’ve lost. On
September 2, 2018, a fierce blaze erupted in Rio de Janeiro, engulfing this
200-year-old establishment in flames.
Brazil National Museum
Among the irreplaceable treasures lost were incredible
fossils, Brazil’s largest meteorite, dinosaur bones, and the mesmerizing
remains of Luzia—a remarkable 12,000-year-old skeleton, the oldest ever found
in the Americas! This historical figure, belonging to an Upper Paleolithic
woman, was discovered within the rich depths of Brazilian caves back in 1975,
and her name is a tribute to the famous African fossil “Lucy.”
The museum was a treasure chest of artifacts spanning
centuries from the Portuguese arrival in the 1500s to the declaration of a
republic in 1889. Each item told a story, a piece of Brazil’s vibrant history
now silenced by flames.
