What happened in 1881 in the national theater Prague?
The National Theatre in Prague is a national
monument of Czech history and art and the alma mater of Czech opera. It is one
of the leading cultural foundations in the Czech Republic, with a long artistic
history. The National Theater aided in the protection and development of the
Czech language and a sense of a Czech musical and theatrical way of thinking.
The National Theatre was inaugurated in 1881 to commemorate Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria's visit. Adolf Čech conducted the world premiere of Bedřich Smetana’s opera Libuše.
Libuše is a three-act "festival opera." Libuše, the title character of the Czech historical
story, predicted the creation of Prague. The opera was written in 1871–72 for
Franz Josef's coronation as King of Bohemia.
On the premises, there is a special entrance for
the Czech President. The President's private box is reached through the
stairwell.
The National Theatre is associated with many minor
and significant myths, legends, and fascinating stories. For example, A barrel
containing the holy water with which St. Cyril baptized the Slavs was allegedly
walled into the foundation stones in 1868.
